Teenage Health Websites

The Brief

The Teenage Health Freak site exists to deliver accurate health information to teenagers in an entertaining manner. Content has to engage and encourage interaction and appear regularly updated – whilst the site itself must have built-in longevity.

Our approach

The site has two parts: i) Pete Payne’s Online Diary - a teenage hypochondriac, Pete acts as a soft entry to health information, linked to at:

ii) Doctor Ann’s Virtual Surgery – this provides health information via avatars, surveys, cartoons, quizzes - encouraging teenagers to fact-find via a wide range of interactive content.

A teen community is achieved through the diary (which can be received via email) and by enabling users to “eavesdrop” on other patients’ conversations with Doctor Ann and ask questions themselves. Because editorial time on this site is constrained by author availability, it is constructed to automate many answers and updates behind the scenes.

The Results

A well established, award-winning site with an excellent reputation and positive feedback:

  • Over 475,000 visits in 2005
  • Over 3 million visits since launch
  • Linked to from hundreds of local and national teenage and health websites
  • Frequently recommended in the press
  • Widely used within schools, teaching materials allow the site to support formal education programmes

Teenage Health Freak

For Teenage Health Freak, we created a site with a teenage community by introducing an online daily diary (long before blogs first appeared) and interactive ways of delivering teen health information. Through the site, adolescents nationwide explore common teen health issues, confident in the knowledge that they'll get reliable, up to date advice.
